Caring for your Manchester

Prefered Foods

Manchester Terriers do best when fed a high-quality diet. We at Mosaic prefer Purina Pro Plan foods. However, we do not recommend their Shredded Blends, as the soy flakes they use as a flavoring do not help high-metabolism breeds like Manchesters hold their weight. The food pictures below are the ones we prefer. However, some dogs can be allergic to chicken, which we haven't noticed in our family.

If you prefer not to use Purina Pro Plan, rest assured that there are other high-quality options available. For instance, Purina ONE offers a salmon protein-based food that could be suitable for your Manchester. We also want to clarify that a grain-free diet is not necessary for your Manchester. These dogs were historically kept in taverns and among the aristocracy, indicating that their digestive tracts are well-equipped to handle grains. Additionally, high-fat diets should be avoided as they can lead to pancreatitis.

Please refrain from taking your feeding advice from the Pet Food Advisor's website. The site has pushed fad diets such as grain-free, which we are learning causes heart disease in many dogs. Our recommendations are based on AAFCO's extensive research.

Food Bowls & Oral Care

We recommend metal bowls for Manchesters. Ceramic or plastic can harbor germs and bacteria that can, at the least, cause acne and, at worst, contribute to poor oral health. There are several oral options we like for our pet's dental health. PlaqueOff is a kelp based power that you sprinkle a small amount on their food. Oxyfresh is a water additive, one capful per lit

  House Training and Litter Boxes

We have used the Puppy Culture program to raise our puppies, and a key component of that program is litter box training for baby puppies. As such, your puppy will willingly use a litter box, and it is a great tool to use should you choose to do so while you are house training your puppy.

If you take a small portion of the litter we will send with your puppy, place it in your yard, and let your puppy smell that litter. It will teach the puppy that this is the area you would like them to use to "go potty".

Litter boxes are also equally useful tools in times of inclement weather or while traveling.

Coat Care

Manchester’s coat is a stiff hair that is set shallowly in their skin. Anything that rubs against them regularly, such as a collar or jacket, will rub their fur off.

For this reason, we suggest rolled leather collars or biothane collars for daily wear to hold tags. Since your Manchester has a smaller head than neck for walking your Manchester, we recommend martingale collars. Martingale dog collars are also known as greyhound, whippet collars.

Martingale collars are designed with two loops, the larger loop is slipped onto the dog’s neck, and a lead is then clipped to the smaller circle. When the dog tries to pull, the tension on the leash pulls the small loop taut, which makes the large loop smaller and tighter on the neck, thus preventing escape. Properly fitted, the collar will be comfortably loose whenever the dog is not pulling against the leash.

*Important*

Manchesters have a high prey drive, are built for speed, and can be tenacious in their hunt.

They should
never be trusted off-lead.
